He was a man who was truly a stranger to no one. With an open heart and an easy smile, he had a way of making people feel welcomed and valued. He loved deeply, laughed often, and lived his life to the fullest.
Glenn proudly served in the United States Navy from November 28, 1972 through November 27, 1977. His time in the Navy was among the proudest days of his life, and he carried that sense of honor, discipline, and service with him always. Following in his father’s footsteps, he considered it a true privilege to serve his country, and he spoke of those years with deep pride and gratitude.
He had a lifelong love for the New York Yankees and the New York Jets, faithfully cheering them on through every season. He loved music, and playing his guitars was one of his greatest passions. Some of Rachel and Sarah’s best memories with their dad are tied to music—him teaching them how to play guitar, buying them their first guitars, and sitting together playing alongside him. Carrying on his legacy through music remains deeply meaningful, and those moments of him playing, and playing together as a family, are among the most cherished memories they will forever hold. Through his love of music, his love for sports, and most of all his love for people, he formed connections everywhere he went, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Glenn was a brilliant man with a sharp and curious mind. He was the person we always turned to in times of questions, problem-solving, or research, trusting his intelligence, insight, and thoughtful perspective. His wisdom and knowledge were gifts he shared freely, and his guidance will be deeply missed.
Glenn was also the best storyteller in the world. If there was one thing to know about him, it was that you were likely going to hear the same story three times or more—but it was always because it was one of the most cherished moments of his life, and he wanted nothing more than to share it with everyone he knew.
He was incredibly proud to be a father and a grandfather. He is survived by his two daughters, Rachel Salerno and her husband Chris Salerno, and Sarah Bowman and her husband Michael Bowman. He was a devoted grandfather to Ethan and Gabriel Bowman, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He was a loving and devoted husband to his surviving wife, Sylvia Dimitrova, with whom he shared four meaningful years together.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Commander Keith Gillette and Irene Gillette, and by his brother, Keith Gillette.
He is now in the loving arms of Jesus and is more alive than ever, restored and at peace in eternal life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 11 at 3:00 PM at McEwen Pineville Funeral Service, located at 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210, to honor and remember a man whose love, kindness, and spirit touched so many lives.
