Grant and his late brother Harold were raised near Elkins, West Virginia, and Grant attended the University of West Virginia on a state Department of Transportation scholarship where he met Lora, his wife of 56 years. The two moved to Akron, Ohio where their first son David was born, and where Grant graduated from the University of Akron with a degree in accounting. His first position as an accountant was with Price Waterhouse, where he would work for the next 24 years in Tampa, Florida; Columbia, SC; and Charlotte, NC. He was partner in charge of the Price Waterhouse offices in both Columbia and in Charlotte. He was one of three part-owners of Consolidated Coin Caterers Corporation, and then became Chief Financial Officer at American Cities Business Journals. He retired in 2003 to pursue his passions for fly-fishing, golf, gardening, and spending time with his friends and family, especially his two grandchildren. He was a man of tremendous character, dignity, intellect and integrity, with a keen sense of humor, who will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Grant is survived by his wife, Lora Cooper Hamrick of Charlotte; son, Grant David and his wife Amy of Estes Park, Colorado; son, Mark Wesley and his wife Leslie of Augusta, Georgia; and grandchildren, Emma Mahin and Grant Evan. Grant was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Escar.
