It is with great sadness we report the passing of Haley Augusta Foard, age 22, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at Hope Community Church on Rea Road in Charlotte at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 5th. Family and friends are welcome to gather in the Hope barn following the service to remember Haley.
Haley was pursuing a degree in Science, Technology and Society at North Carolina State University with plans to graduate in May of 2024. Haley was passionate about making technology more accessible to those with disabilities and she planned to pursue work in this field following graduation. Haley was a Resident Assistant in the Engineering dormitory at NC State. There she found a community of people that enjoyed many of the same things as she did. She looked forward to her weekly Dungeons and Dragons meetings. She was a leader and founder of DUCK Club, a student-run organization to help students connect with the outdoors and each other. Haley enjoyed so many things, hiking, rock climbing, baking cookies and volunteering to help dogs find forever homes.
Before college Haley was a student at Myers Park High School, where she earned an International Baccalaureate degree that provided her with the rigorous education that she was desiring. She was involved in the cross-country team, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, and a swing dancing club that she started with a few friends. Haley won many awards for her hard work and dedication to all types of academic pursuits. She excelled in math, science, and art. At her senior awards ceremony we lost track of how many times she was called up on stage to receive awards. Her most notable was the “Book Award” from Wake Forest University.
As a youth Haley was our own Hermione Granger. She sought out knowledge and wasn’t afraid to share what she knew with courage. At a young age she memorized a book called The Dog Breed Bible. She would identify every dog we saw and give us all the statistics on that breed off the top of her head. She even created her own “breed” for our dog Honey. When people would inquire about Honey’s breed Haley would reply “She’s and Aleutian Shepard known for herding salmon” and then proceeded to share the temperament, energy level, and grooming requirements for the breed, even though Honey was the only one of her kind.
Haley was a bright and perky child. She was always ready to try new things. Her first year at Sharon Elementary, as a 5th grader, she came home and announced she was going to try out for the choir. Haley had never been into music or singing, but that didn’t stop her from getting a spot on the MI Express Choir. Haley’s optimism could not be contained. She went blackberry picking one day and came home with a small handful of berries in her basket and announced that she was going to make jam. David replied sarcastically “Good luck with that” Haley skipped away and pleasantly replied “Thank you David!”
Haley will be deeply missed by her mother and father, her brothers Christopher and David, by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends, and teachers. Saving Grace, an animal rescue in Wake Forest, North Carolina, is a charity that was near and dear to Haley’s heart. We believe Haley would have wished that any memorial contributions in her honor be made to Saving Grace.
