Harding was born in Cabarrus County on March 5, 1921, son of Manulis J Shinn and Lillias Walters Shinn. After graduating from Winecoff High School in 1939, he worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Co before joining the Army in 1942.
During his military career, he completed the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet program, earning his 'wings' and commission as a 2nd Lt. He was active duty for 3.5 years as a pilot instructor flying various biplane aircraft, later training with B-26 twin engine bombers.
After discharge from active duty, he attended NC State University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and transferred to the Air Force Reserve serving 24 years, retiring with the rank of Lt Colonel.
Most of his working career was with Mogul Corp, beginning as a salesman, then Division Manager, then National Accounts Manager. He was active in Toastmasters International, Sales and Marketing Executives, and The Carolina Ambassadors. After retirement, he worked for The Executive Association of Greater Charlotte for 16 years, serving as Executive VP.
Joining Dilworth Rotary in 1964, he remained active til death. He was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and had 50 years of perfect attendance, serving in a number of offices including President. He volunteered in many capacities at Friendship Trays, Cities in Schools, Habitat for Humanity, and USO.
Being an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church, he served in a number of offices and many capacities including President of Methodist Men, Sunday school teacher, and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He also served as President of Charlotte District United Methodist men.
He is survived by son Warren (Kimberly), son Mark (Michelle) and daughter Ashley Samuels. Grandchildren: Jessica Browning, Madison Samuels, Jake Samuels; Maya Shinn, Nicholas Shinn, Rhiannon Wright (Kevin), Sarah (Tim) Clevenger; Laura (Jake) Royal; William Shinn.
11 Great Grand Children: Preston, Ethan, Braydon, Jaxon Clevenger; Aiden and Emersyn Walker; Liam, Felix, Hazel Wright; Kane and Elijah Browning, and Isabella White.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Maxene Sevier Shinn (2015), his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Buren, Elwyn, Howard, Muriel (McAnulty), Mavis (Turner), and Dulcie (Jones), and 3 nieces and 3 nephews.
