Harold (Hal) Cole, 92, died on October 7, 2014. He was born in Lakewood, NY on January 21, 1922, son of Edwin and Allene Cole. He grew up in Jamestown, NY and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939. He attended and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1943 and then served as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps for 2½ years during World War II. Upon being honorably discharged, he returned to the University of Alabama as an instructor in the accounting department. Hal met and later married one of his former university students, Mary Larmour.
After leaving the teaching profession, he became an educational representative for South-Western Publishing Company where he worked until his retirement in 1987 as District Sales Manager. He and Mary moved to Greensboro, NC in 1949. They and their two sons, Roger and Rick, moved to Charlotte in 1956.
He served as Republican Precinct #47 Chairman for 8 years and coached Little League baseball for several years. Hal was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, and a teacher of the confirmand class for several years. Working with the youth of the church was a great source of joy for him.
During his retirement Hal spent several years tutoring in local elementary schools. He was also a dedicated volunteer for Habitat for Humanity well into his 80’s. Spending time in his workshop designing and building birdhouses was a favorite hobby.
Hal and Mary enjoyed traveling together and visited 48 countries, 13 islands, and much of the U.S. Golf was a great part of his life having been a member of Pine Lake Country Club for 36 years. During that time he scored four holes-in-one—a feat he attributes to luck and proper wind speed and direction.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one older brother, Richard. He is survived by his two sons, Roger and Rick, and his grandson, Alex. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Hal will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or to Habitat for Humanity. McEwen Funeral Services is serving the Cole family.
