
Harold Michael Starr passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, NC from pulmonary fibrosis, heart issues and kidney dysfunction. He was born February 10, 1933 in Jersey City, NJ.
Mr. Starr was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with his master's degree in mathematics and was a member of its faculty. He was also a member of Mensa.
Mr. Starr was an early pioneer in the field of mainframe computer programming; had a major role in developing the systems that ran the second generation IBM main frames; and computerized presidential campaign election results in the early '60s and financial and retail industries. In his later years, he was a board member and active participant of the Charlotte Bridge Association, known for directing the Monday games for many years. In addition, Mr. Starr had some very unique talents - he could peel an orange in one piece, and do the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in less than 15 minutes in ink.
Mr. Starr is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Joshua and Emma Starr of Bethesda, MD; his daughter, Jordana Starr of New York, NY; his brother, Ira; and sister-in-law, Diane Starr of Montville, NJ; his nephew and niece, Steve and Stephanie Starr; his niece, Shari Duddy; and his grandchildren, Harrison, Aliza and Graham. He was also the much loved ""Uncle H'' to Danny, Maddy, Gianna, Meli, and Davey.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions made in Mr. Starr's name to The Charlotte Bridge Association, 510 East Park Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28202, 704-333-9117.
Funeral and burial service in New Jersey will be private.
