Born on October 12, 1937 in Newport, Rhode Island to the late Harold and Elsie Uttley, Harold earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1959. From 1960-1962, he honorably served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, receiving a National Defense Service Medal following the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Harold began his career as a sales engineer for General Electric and Reliance Electrical Co. He later joined the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired after 21 years of service.
His true callings were his faith and service to others through Freemasonry. Harold was bestowed the highest degree in the Scottish Rite of 33rd Inspector General Honorary in 2021. He was also an active member of the Scottish Rite Research Society, the Royal Order of Scotland and Oasis Shrine Temple.
For more than 55 years, he was a devoted member of Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, serving as a deacon and member of the senior adult choir. He also volunteered at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte.
Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Janice Troy Uttley, in 2010. He is survived by his brother, David Uttley (wife Earlene) of Norwich, CT; son, Brandon Uttley (wife Kelli Scott) of Huntersville, NC; daughter, Heather Uttley of Charlotte; grandson, Miles Uttley; granddaughter, Olivia Uttley of Huntersville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service celebrating Harold's life will be held at 11 a.m. May 2, 2024, at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, followed by a reception at Red Rocks Cafe, 4223 Providence Rd #8, in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children's or Providence Baptist Church.
