Harry grew up in Charlotte and graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1956, then served in the NC Air National Guard. He then spent most of his work career in the automotive service industry, working for Chrysler Corporation and then for dealerships in Charlotte and Wilmington. In the 80s, he changed courses and embarked on an entrepreneurship as owner and operator of Hy-Win Enterprises, a medical equipment distribution company, where he enjoyed traveling the carolinas and forming personal relationships with his customers. After retiring, he spent time between Denver, NC and his home in Lake Lure.
He never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with people everywhere he went. In Denver, he enjoyed frequent breakfast trips to Stacy's. He also learned ballroom dancing and was actively involved in the social dance clubs in the area. When in Lake Lure, he loved gardening and you could often find him relaxing on the porch in one of his rocking chairs. He was a Mason, serving over 50 years with East Gate Masonic Lodge #692 in Charlotte.
He loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his three children, Kim Hirst (Jimmy) of Lake Lure, Mark Wingate (Melissa) of Statesville, NC, and Amy Porterfield (Cliff) of Roxboro, NC; five grandchildren, Sean Hirst, Trevor Hirst (Jordan), Megan Elliott (Anthony), Jeremy Porterfield (Racheal), and Chase Porterfield (Piper); and three step-grandchildren, Cassie Smith, John Smith (Lindsey), and Josh Smith (Kristen); as well as six great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, and three nieces.
