Mr. Akins, age 93, of Charlotte, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Thursday, September 6, 2012. Born January 29, 1929 in Hoke Co., he was a son of the late Van James Akins, Sr. and Alice Bernie McCracken Akins. Mr. Akins served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. For twenty years he was a truck driver. Later, Mr. Akins was employed with Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens for over ten years. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. Mr. Akins was an avid hunter and fisherman.
The service to celebrate the life of Harvey Watson Akins will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 10, 2012 in the Hudson Chapel of Northside Baptist Church with Reverend Ed Propst, officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Louise Mangum Akins a daughter, Linda A. Walker, and her husband, Bill, all of the home; three grandchildren, Mike Batts of Charlotte, Tricia Lynch and her husband, Mark, of Hilton Head Island, SC and Jonathan Walker and his wife, Jennifer, of Rock Hill; three great grandchildren, Sarah Batts of Mooresville and Reagan and Olivia Lynch, both of Hilton Head Island, SC; two siblings, Josephine Strauss of Berwick, PA and James Akins of Concord; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Akins was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie; and six siblings, Viola, Carl, Mary, Rebecca, Bennie Lee and Dwight.
