Harvey “Harv” Maxwell Lightstone passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 4:32 PM Eastern Time at a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving family and in the devoted care of the Atrium Health staff.
Born on February 9, 1945, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Harvey was the beloved son of the late Emanuel Lightstone and Sophie Shulman.
In true Harvey fashion, his story began with a bold move—he famously misstated his age in order to enlist in the Canadian Army, where he proudly served as a Corporal before being honorably discharged on August 14, 1968.
Harvey lived a full and vibrant life, defined by connection, culture, and a deep love of music—especially jazz. A proud Steinway member of Middle C Jazz Club in Charlotte, he could often be found there several nights a week, immersed in the music and camaraderie he cherished so deeply. His warmth, charisma, and genuine interest in others helped him build an extraordinary network of friendships that spanned coast to coast and reached across the globe.
He was a passionate supporter of the arts community in Charlotte, including the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Middle C Jazz Club, and the Belk Theater. He also proudly supported the Wounded Warrior Project, reflecting his enduring respect for service and sacrifice.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Shinn; his sons, Danny and Deron; his daughter, Amanda; his cherished grandchildren, Sofía and Leonardo; his sister, Marilyn; and his brother, Lester. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services have not yet been scheduled. Celebration of Harvey’s life will be held at a future date on both the East and West Coasts.
