Hayne Wilson Baucom

He reached a significant milestone of 100 years of age and was celebrated by his family with a festive birthday party in his home. Sadly, he passed away less than a month later on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Hayne proudly served in the U.S. Navy from September 1944 to May 1946 and again from October 1950 till August 1952. He worked for Sears Roebuck in Charlotte, NC in the automotive department beginning April 1948 and retiring September 1999. After retirement, he returned to Sears part-time, working for another four years, making his employment with Sears a total of 55 years — a fact that made him very proud.

Hayne was a lifelong member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and the Epworth Sunday School Class. He actively participated in the church Prayer Breakfast and the Music Makers.

The love of Hayne’s life was his wife, Sarah Sherrill Baucom. They were married for 53 years before Sarah passed away in October 2005 after a long illness.

Hayne is survived by his two daughters, Sherrill McLaughlin (Joe) of Jacksonville, NC and Gail Breeyear of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Matt McLaughlin (Charlotte), Colleen McLaughlin (Nick), Caitlin McLaughlin, Will Breeyear (Anne Gray) and Joseph Breeyear (Taylor); two great-grandsons, James McLaughlin and Max McLaughlin.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Hazel McCollum, Joe Baucom, Thurman Baucom, Kenneth Baucom and Wadine Pope. His surviving sister is Marie Taylor.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 1:00-2:00 pm in the church parlor at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, located at 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28215. Funeral services will be held in the church sanctuary at 2:00 pm officiated by Reverend Caitlin Lai.
