Hobert Claxton Welch, 91, died June 10, 2026. Born April 16, 1935, in Davidson County, North Carolina, Hobert was the 11th of 13 children of Hobert Andrew and Amanda Sue Nifong Welch. A man of steady character and quiet strength, he carried himself with a gentle, kind-hearted presence—thoughtful in his ways, honest in his dealings, and devoted to those he loved.
Hobert served in the U.S. Army for two years. He began working at Duke Power in his late teens and remained there until his 50s, known for being hard-working and dependable. In later years, he continued to do a variety of jobs, meeting each season of life with the same practical resolve and care for others.
On June 8, 1958, Hobert married Billie Hammett Welch, and they shared a devoted marriage until her passing in November 2015. He is survived by two children, Nancy of Laurinburg, North Carolina, and Doug (Amy) of Miami, Florida. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and by one living sister, Leona Fishel.
Hobert enjoyed baseball and basketball, and he coached his children when they were young—an unassuming way of showing love through time, presence, and patience. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing. His green thumb was evident in his beloved backyard garden, where he took great pride in growing tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers—sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Hobert also loved to travel both in country and abroad with his family. Those who knew him best recognized that even as a man of few words, he carried a warm humor that could surface at just the right moment.
He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for over 50 years until moving to Laurinburg, North Carolina, in 2015. His gentle spirit and involvement in the church community left a lasting impact on many. True to his nature, Hobert did not need many words to make his meaning known; loyal to his word, he lived with a quiet integrity that earned deep respect and lasting affection. Beloved by family and remembered with gratitude, he will be missed greatly.
His family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Scotia Village and Scotland Hospice for their compassionate care during Hobert’s final journey.
