Hoke worked his way through the University of Georgia, graduating in 1950. Through the generosity of his uncle, Sam Murray, he was able to earn his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While in medical school, he met Sara Jane Bryson, whom he married in 1954. Hoke completed his internship and three years of residency at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
Hoke and Sara moved to Charlotte in 1961 when he joined the staff of the Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital. He served on the boards of the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center and the Greater Charlotte Foundation. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, past president of the Charlotte Rotary Club, past chairman of the otolaryngology section of the N.C. Medical Society, and past president of the N.C. Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He was a member of Quail Hollow Country Club.
A gentleman and a scholar and the example of a life well-lived, Hoke was much loved by his family, friends and patients and well respected by his peers in the medical community. His passions were his family, travel and Georgia football. In their many travels, Sara and he visited all seven continents.
Hoke is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sara; children, Kathryn Nash Davis (Robert) of Richmond, VA, Andrew Kevin Nash (Sheri Lynch) of Charlotte, and Amy Frances Nash (Grant Vanstrum) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Bryson Elliot Davis, Michael Porter Davis, Andrew Kevin Nash, Jr., Margaret Joan Nash, Russell Hoke Nash, Zane Adams Nash, Caramia Axland and Olivia Axland; sisters, Ouida Banister and Carolyn Davis; niece, Carol B.
