May 18, 1930December 11, 2012

Dr. Nash, 82, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012. He was born May 18, 1930 in Athens, GA.

Hoke worked his way through the University of Georgia, graduating in 1950. Through the generosity of his uncle, Sam Murray, he was able to earn his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While in medical school, he met Sara Jane Bryson, whom he married in 1954. Hoke completed his internship and three years of residency at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

Hoke and Sara moved to Charlotte in 1961 when he joined the staff of the Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital. He served on the boards of the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center and the Greater Charlotte Foundation. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, past president of the Charlotte Rotary Club, past chairman of the otolaryngology section of the N.C. Medical Society, and past president of the N.C. Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He was a member of Quail Hollow Country Club.

A gentleman and a scholar and the example of a life well-lived, Hoke was much loved by his family, friends and patients and well respected by his peers in the medical community. His passions were his family, travel and Georgia football. In their many travels, Sara and he visited all seven continents.

Hoke is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sara; children, Kathryn Nash Davis (Robert) of Richmond, VA, Andrew Kevin Nash (Sheri Lynch) of Charlotte, and Amy Frances Nash (Grant Vanstrum) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Bryson Elliot Davis, Michael Porter Davis, Andrew Kevin Nash, Jr., Margaret Joan Nash, Russell Hoke Nash, Zane Adams Nash, Caramia Axland and Olivia Axland; sisters, Ouida Banister and Carolyn Davis; niece, Carol B. Adams; and nephews, Jay Davis, Ted Davis and William Yarbrough.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211 or to the University of Georgia Foundation for the Sam and Grace Murray Scholarship Fund (Milledge Centre, Suite 100, 394 South Milledge Ave., Athens, GA, 30602-5582) that Hoke established in memory of the uncle whose financial assistance enabled him to attend medical school.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be in the parlor following the service.

Hoke and I grew up together on Barber Street in Athens. He came by to see me a couple of years ago and we had a good time talking about old times. As kids we used to call him Tootsie Yarborough, which was his grandparents last name. When he came to my door that day and said he was Hoke, I had to think(at 86 yrs old then) but I said Tootsie and we both had a big laugh. He was fine gentleman and it was an honor to know him. Prayers to you all.

My first job out of college was with Dr. Nash in 1975 as his personal secretary. I worked with him for ten years and he was genuinely thoughtful and generous throughout the entire time. He "took me under his wing" and made sure the staff at the old Charlotte EENT Hospital made me feel welcomed and taught me the ropes to feel a part of the hospital "family". I still have all of the beautiful souveniours that he and Sara brought back from their many travels around the world and will truly treasure them always. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family and the medical field, because he was a wonderful man and a dedicated physician for many years. Kim Cook (Concord, NC)

I am so sorry to hear Dr. Nash is no longer with us. I have many fond memories of him-I worked with Dr. Felkner at the old CEENTA on 3rd St. It is so amazing that everytime I have seen him since I left CEENTA, he has never changed. My prayers are with you & your family. He will be missed. With Christian Love,

I shall always remember the good times that Hoke, Hugh Firor, and I had playing handball and studying together for Calvin Brown's world lit exams. Indeed, Hoke's was a life well lived. Mike Michael, Montgomery AL
