Homer Mathew Myers, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, with his beloved wife, Sara, by his side. Born on July 4, 1934, Homer lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, craftsmanship, vision, and a deep love for people.
Homer proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 as an Airman Second Class, including time stationed in Germany as a medic. During his service, he was also a boxer—his favorite sport—which reflected his strength, discipline, and determination.
He was educated in the Rowan public schools and graduated from Mt. Ulla High School in 1952. Following his military service, he attended Central Piedmont Community College.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Myers and Tiny Mae Brown Myers Williams; his brothers, Glenn, James, Wayne, and Benny Myers; and his infant son, John Sidney Myers.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Sara Wooten Myers, who stood faithfully by his side throughout their life together.
Throughout his working years in Charlotte, Homer held a variety of roles, including shoe sales with Endicott Johnson Shoes, construction with Marsh Realty, welding at IKG Industries, metal fabrication with Steelfab, Inc., and leadership positions at General Steel Drum and Monarch Printing Company. He also worked as a printing press operator for Jones Presnell Graphics. Known as a true handyman, Homer could fix nearly anything—from removing squirrels from chimneys and hornets’ nests from trees to complex home repairs, and even dynamite stump removal.
Homer had a lifelong passion for antique cars and was a devoted member of the Hornets’ Nest Region Antique Car Club of America for over 35 years. He also enjoyed gardening, landscaping, home construction, and working in his blacksmith shop—always creating something with his hands.
Above all, Homer was a people person. He never met a stranger, and many lifelong friendships began simply because he introduced himself. His familiar words, “I’m so glad I got to meet you,” left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Homer was also a dreamer and a visionary. He believed in pursuing a vision even when others could not yet see it. One of his most remarkable accomplishments was building a three-story library atop a mountain using reclaimed wood he gathered over decades from attics, garages, and homes that had been torn down. He and Sara filled the library with items they had collected over a lifetime—so unique, so them, so unforgettable.
The cedar shakes adorning the outside of the library are all different colors and sizes, each one unique—just as Homer saw people. As he often said, “Cedar shakes, all different sizes, shapes, and colors—no one is turned away,” reflecting not only his building philosophy, but his welcoming heart toward people from all walks of life.
Even later in life, Homer continued creating. At the age of 85, he designed and crafted a chandelier in his blacksmith shop that now hangs in the library—a testament to his enduring creativity and determination.
Many will remember Homer riding his motorcycle with his loyal dog, Judge, by his side. Together, they delighted in local parades and adventures—a heartwarming sight that perfectly captured Homer’s adventurous spirit, love for life, and cherished companionship with Judge.
Homer’s life serves as a reminder to stay true to one’s vision, to move forward with purpose, and to encourage others in their dreams. He lived propelled by an inner drive—full of ideas, plans, and determination—and leaves behind a legacy of creativity, perseverance, and inspiration.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SupportNovantHealth.org/CharlotteComfortCare at Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation, Novant Health Hospice, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233, or to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
