Ila L. Self

Ila L. Self, 103, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026 in her home surrounded by her family. Born July 14, 1922 in Burnsville, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas and Mary Jane (Gaddy) Rushing. She was the wife of the late James Ernest Self Sr.

She was a member of Chapman Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte. Her greatest joy was her family.

An avid gardener, Ila always had a massive flower and vegetable garden. She also enjoyed listening to country music, cracking jokes and playing pranks. She had an endearing love for children and they loved her back.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Ruth Millsap, Harold Self, Howard (Chieko) Self, Reba (Mike) Jones, Bruce Self and Barbara Beaken; sister, Nellie Sanders; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ila was preceded in death by her son, James Ernest Self Jr; daughter, Katie Lee Self; along with her siblings, Vernon, Bennie, Ray, Marvin, Clyde, Claude, Faye and Lizzie.

A visitation for Ila will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026 from 9:30 am until the time of her funeral service at 10:00 am in the chapel of McEwen Funerals & Cremations at Forest Lawn West, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC.
