

Mrs. Pollard, 91, peacefully joined her beloved husband Jack Johnston Pollard, Sr. on March 30, 2012. Her sister, Peggy Mayhew Wood, preceded her in death.
Iris was born at Presbyterian Hospital on August 20, 1920. She attended Wilmore, Berryhill and Alexander Graham for her primary and secondary years and then Queens College. She met her loving husband Jack while working at Horton Motor Lines in 1939. They were married at Calvary Methodist Church in Charlotte on August 9, 1942. After having one child, Jack Jr., she worked for N.G. Speir, Inc. for 21 years. She retired in 1971. Iris worked for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for another 10 years. She was a lifelong member of Hawthorne Lane Methodist Church.
Iris is survived by her devoted son, Jack J. Pollard, Jr. and his wife, Molly Transou Pollard of Richmond, Virginia; grandson, Jack J. Pollard, III of Richmond, Va.; granddaughter, Jennifer Pollard Scott and husband, Durelle of Blacksburg, Va.; niece, Rose Marie Wood Saunders; nephews, James Albert Wood, III, and Banks Mayhew Wood, of Charlotte and Billy and Julie Transou of Charlotte; and four “lil’ babes” who were treated like great-grandchildren, Will and Hannah Transou of Charlotte and Beatrice and Nola Scott of Blacksburg, Va. She also had numerous, dear friends who resided with her at the Carriage Club in Charlotte, a home she truly loved.
Iris will always be remembered for her great poise, kindness, true southern etiquette, and love of being a social butterfly. She was a devoted wife and mother, and adored her two Jack’s more than anything. Her enduring politeness, classy taste and practical mindset enabled her to be admired by many. Iris’ generation represents an iconic group of fine, southern women. Her spirit will continue to be with us and in us.
Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte.
A service by the graveside will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 2nd at Sharon Memorial Park with the Reverend Dr. Roger Lakatos officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte or Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church.
