

Mr. Crump, age 91, of Pineville, entered into eternal rest on July 23, 2017. He was born on May 20, 1926, in Pineville, NC the son of the late Thomas S. & Mary K. Crump. Mr. Crump graduated from Pineville High School in May 1944 where he was the Valedictorian. On July 23, 1944 he married his childhood sweetheart, Gaynelle Price in York, S. C.
His first job was with Scott Drug Company. He was employed there until he entered the Army. On November 27, 1944, Mr. Crump was inducted into the Army at Camp Croft, SC. He went through basic training at Camp Blanding, FL. After basic training, he was assigned to the 98th Chemical Mortar Battalion on April 28, 1945. They were then stationed in the Philippine Islands. Since he was only 19 at the time, he was not old enough to serve on the front lines, so when his company was sent out he was left behind to fend for himself in the Philippine Village. After many months, they finally returned and he rejoined his company. While in the Philippines, he was selected as one of only 10 men to test gas masks in preparation for the possible invasion of Japan. He returned to the states in June 1946 and was assigned to Fort Jackson, SC. He was discharged at Fort Bragg, NC on August 1, 1946 with an Honorable Discharge with a World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation ribbon with one Bronze star, Good Conduct medal, and Asiatic Pacific Service medal with one Bronze star.
On October 15, 1946, Mr. Crump was hired by the Town of Pineville. From then until he retired in July, 1982, he served as Town Manager, Clerk, and Finance Director. During his employment, under the direction of the Mayors and Town Councils, he was involved in many of the historical events of the Town. He prepared required documents and materials for the following: In 1950, the Town had a Bond Election to secure funds to install a water line from Arrowood. At that time, the Pineville water supply was provided by wells and they could not provide enough water. During his tenure, the Town of Pineville annexed the following areas: Carolina Place Mall, the BI-LO area, Tyes Community, Copperfield, Tower Place, Centrum, Blacklion area, Carolina Medical Center, T. D. Ray area, Concrete Pumping area, Southland Industrial Park and the James K Polk Memorial property. The Town improved the Electric Service by increasing the primary voltage and changed the Telephone Company from battery operated to dial. He helped serve a Federal Grant to build Jack Hughes Park. After retiring from the Town of Pineville, Mr. Crump was employed by K-Mart from 1982 to 1996 and then by Sears from 1996 to 1999. He retired from both places.
Mr. Crump was a lifetime member of Stough Memorial Baptist Church. He served over the years as a Deacon, Trustee, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, and a member of other committees.
During his lifetime, Mr. Crump served on the following: Board of Director - Pineville Telephone Company, Board of Director - ElectriCities of NC, Board of Director - Municipal Power Agency #1, Advisory Board - United Carolina Bank, One term as Chairman of Charlotte Mecklenburg Housing Authority, Quartermaster of William F. Crump Post 9091 Veterans of Foreign Wars of NC, and Member of James K. Polk Masonic Lodge #759.
Mr. Crump was given an award by the Pineville Police for organizing a candle light service to honor those who served in the Persian Gulf War. For service to the Town and Community, he was inducted into the "Order of the Hornet" in 1982 by the Board of County Commissioners. Mr. Crump also organized the annual Veteran's Day ceremony at the Pineville Cemetery.
Mr. Crump had a close knit family and loved everyone dearly. He enjoyed sports, especially watching those participated in by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Crump was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gaynelle, and brothers Samuel, Bobby, and William F. Crump.
He is survived by one son, Ritchie Crump and wife Susie of Huntersville, NC; two daughters, Pam Crump of Pineville, NC and Jill Knox and husband Jerry of Fort Mill, SC; his grandchildren Jennifer McGuirt and husband, Dustin of Fort Mill, SC; Jessica McGuirt and husband Andrew of Catawba, SC; Ricky Venable and wife Katie of Charlotte, NC; Shannon Filliben of Indian Land, SC; Josh Crump and wife Lauren Hill of Chapel Hill, NC; Jeremy Crump and wife Nicole of Cornelius, NC; Nicholas Garris and wife Jessi of Charlotte, NC; his great grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Camryn Crump, Ayden Crump, Kinsley McGuirt, Ava McGuirt, Leighton Crump, Hunter Reilly, and Sydney Reilly and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Southminster Hospice House for their help and loving care during the last days of his life.

Services will be held at Gracelife Church of Pineville, Thursday, July 27, 2017 with the Visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 PM, and the Funeral beginning at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Pineville City Cemetery.
