Jack Craven Johnston, age 94, passed away at his home in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was preceded in death by Charlotte H. Johnston, his dear wife of 67 years, and his son Jack C. Johnston, Jr. Jack Sr. was the eldest son of Milas and Nellie Johnston of Huntersville, NC.
Jack Sr. was born in 1925 and grew up in the Huntersville area where he graduated from high school and then joined the US Navy to serve his country during WW2. In the Navy, he was in charge of the engine room of a landing ship, the LSM-234 between 1943 - 1946. He participated in several island offensives during his enlistment. After discharge, he continued to travel across the US as a truck driver and spent time with his growing family. He continued to pursue his mechanical passions by working on his cars and home as often as he could.He loved to share anecdotes of his life and time in the Navy. He was a born storyteller and never met a stranger. We will all miss his kind spirit as he sets sail for his next journey.
Surviving him are his children - Janet Peffer and David Johnston, grandchildren - Mark Brookshire, Emily Peffer, and Jack H. Johnston as well as many great-grandchildren.
Services will be held this Saturday, December 7th with visitation starting at 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte. Funeral Service will follow at 2pm. Interment will take place at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to those that served Jack in life including; Novant Hospice or Veteran's Service groups such as the Wounded Warrior Project or your local Veterans of Foreign Wars organization.
