She will be remembered with deep respect and enduring affection by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
While she grew up in Buchanan, VA, she moved to Salem, VA in her 20’s, where she met her husband, Wendell. They were married for 53 years. She had an unwavering love for her son and daughter, Kevin and Candice, and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. She was very supportive of their work and hobbies throughout her life and enjoyed spending time with their dogs as well.
Throughout her life, Jackie was known for having an adventurous spirit and wonderful sense of humor paired with steady thoughtfulness and a kind-hearted way of caring for others-qualities that were felt most deeply within her family, where she was a dedicated mother and wife.
Growing up in Buchanan, VA, she enjoyed spending time with her brothers, sister, and cousins. She was active with her family at Buchanan Baptist Church, which she portrayed in many of her artworks. Jackie had a variety of hobbies such as calligraphy, painting, music, playing bridge, time with her family, cooking, and traveling. She constructed a variety of art works, as it was one of her main passions.
She worked at Norfolk Southern Railroad doing administrative work for many of her years in Salem. In her retired years, she spent time volunteering at the Charlotte Bridge Center, where she found a welcoming community and met many new friends. She traveled all over the world playing bridge. This is where she found a community she loved and a new passion in her later years, which she adored.
Jackie’s predecessors were her father, George Cummings Haymaker, her mother, Phyllis Sink Haymaker, her brother, George C Haymaker and nephew David Haymaker. Surviving family members include her husband of 53 years, Wendell Lewis Key, son Kevin Key and daughter Candice Key, each of Charlotte, NC. Her brother Don Haymaker (JoLynn) Moneta, VA, her sister Mary Haymaker, Buchanan VA, cousin Judy Worthington, Powder Springs, Georgia, and sister-in-law Betty Haymaker, Augusta, Georgia. She has many nieces and nephews she loved dearly, including Lindsay Key Miller, Daryl Key, Matt Key, Lauri Key, Heather Haas, Mark Haymaker, and Donnie Haymaker, Jeffrey Haymaker, and Brandon Haymaker along with many other family members she cared deeply for as well.
There will be a visitation Saturday, August 15, at 11 AM, followed by Celebration of Life at 12 PM, and then a reception at 1 PM, at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, located at 5716 Monroe Rd. Charlotte, NC 28212. There will also be a Memorial Service on Saturday August 22, at 3 PM in the afternoon at Springwood Baptist Church located at 88 Copps Hill Road, Buchanan, VA 24006.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Charlotte Bridge Center or the Alzheimer’s Association in Jackie’s memory. Please see the links below.
