James was born on March 18,1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Garland James Callens, Sr. and Pearlie Mae Callens. James married the love of his life, Lee, and he was a proud father of ten children. James was an incredible father, grandfather and great grandfather.
James was a dedicated skilled barber for over 50 years, and in that time, he didn’t just cut hair—he built friendships, shared wisdom, and earned the respect of many generations. His chair was more than a place to sit; he always had gems of wisdom to share. The barbershop was a place people knew they’d be welcomed, listened to, and cared for.
James, Grandpa, Pops didn’t shy away from sprinkling extra salt on his food, no matter who’s watching, and was just as generous with his opinions. His presence was strong and seasoned, making him memorable in any room he walked into. His family called him King James.
He was social in the best way—always had gems of wisdom to share, ready with a story, a laugh, or just good company. He was never in a rush, always finding joy in life’s simple blessings.
He was a man full of passion, pouring his heart into the things that brought him joy—whether he was out fishing, locked in a game of dominoes, speculating on any subject, standing by the grill, or serving up food with love. He was truly social, never happier than when he was surrounded by family and his friends.
His outspokenness was his hallmark. He would talk for hours. Above all, he was deeply respected, not only for his skills, but for the way he treated people. His presence was a blessing in our lives, and his memory will continue to inspire us.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his wife, Lee Ethel Callens; sons, James Callens, Jr., Randy Callens, Brandon Callens, Bruce Callens, and Lorenzo Callens; and daughter, Lorraine Callens.
James is survived by his children, Connie (Dexter) Wordlaw, Jerome (Lucy) Callens, Charles (Tasha) Hubbard, and Jeffrey Hubbard; grandchildren, James E. Callens III, April Callens, Corey Callens, Amber Cruz, Loren Wordlaw, Rami Callens, Tia Callens, Gabriel Robledo, and Ashley Callens, as well as a host of great grandchildren and greater grandchildren.
