

Mr. Funderburk, age 92, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, February 20, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital - Main. Born December 23, 1920 in Lancaster, SC, he was a son of the late William Otto Funderburk and Eulalia Clifton Funderburk. His family moved to Charlotte when he was 12 years old. Mr. Funderburk graduated from Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Strayer College. Immediately after receiving his degree, He was employed in the General Accounting Office (GAO) in Washington, D.C. Mr. Funderburk served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He and his family moved back to Charlotte in 1947. He earned his CPA license and went to work in the corporate tax department of Haskins & Sells, now known as Deloitte & Touche. He eventually made partner and retired in 1982. Mr. Funderburk was a charter member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he served on the finance committee and served as communion steward for 25 years. He was a member and past president of the Charlotte Civitan Club. Mr. Funderburk had a great sense of humor and always lived by the motto, “Be honest in all you do!” He enjoyed traveling, playing golf and spending time with his family.
The service to celebrate the life of James Otto Funderburk will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 25, 2013 at Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Don Newman, officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service.
Survivors include three children, Deborah F. Eudy (and husband, Samuel) of Charlotte, William F. Funderburk (and wife, Sue) of Mint Hill and James O. Funderburk, Jr. (and wife, Linda) of Glastonbury, CT; seven grandchildren, Laura Funderburk, Karl Funderburk and Mark Funderburk (and wife, Leigh), all of CT, William Funderburk, Jr. (and wife, Heather) of Huntersville, Matthew Funderburk (and wife, Emily) of Indian Trail, Erica E. Childers (and husband, Gary) of Taylorsville and Gregory B. Eudy (and fiancé, Alyssa Tyler) of Charlotte; seven great grandchildren, Otto, Tess, Lulu, Aidan, Noah, Alexa and Ashlyn; a niece; and two nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Funderburk was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Johnson Funderburk; brother, Robert Clifton Funderburk; and sister-in-law, Ann Funderburk.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Emeritus at Eastover Assisted Living and Presbyterian Hospital for their compassionate care.
