

Jim was born to Neal Caldwell Hunter and Nellie Smith Hunter on August 3, 1936, the youngest of their seven children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Fink Hunter, his parents; two brothers and three sisters; his stepson Steven Van Linker and stepdaughter Deborah Susan Linker.
A native Charlottean, Jim was a military veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force (SSG) and National Guard (4 years) after graduating from West Mecklenburg High School. He received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. After his military active duty, he graduated from Charlotte College and Kings Business College with a BS in Business Administration. He had a long career in sales and management in the trucking industry, having retired after 23 years from McLean Trucking as Sales Manager and Branch Manager in Charlotte, NC, Asheville, NC and West Palm Beach, FL. This retirement was followed by another after 13 years with ABF Freight Systems, during which he served on the Board of Governors for 8 years, was a member of the ABV President's Club and spent time as President of the Columbia, SC Traffic & Transportation Club.
Until his death, Jim was a member of the American Legion Post #563 in Harrisburg, NC and of Disabled American Veterans. His most cherished affiliation was his membership at Broadus Baptist Church in Concord, NC, where he was a trustee and cheerfully served God and church. He was especially blessed by his years spent in the nursing home ministry; he especially enjoyed planning the church's semiannual golf outings, coordinating men's prayer breakfasts and other events.
Survivors include son James Conrad Hunter (Mina) of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren Wolfgang Mehta-Hunter and Lillian Hunter; brother Claude Buck Hunter (Mary) of Monroe, NC; and his many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren; stepfamily: son, William Leslie Linker (Jo Ann) of Harrisburg; daughter, Tammy Wright (Mike) of Port Charlotte, FL; and many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Broadus Baptist Church at 59 Green Street in Concord, NC at 12 noon on Thursday, November 5, 2020, with Dr. J. Rodney Quesenberry, Pastor officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte is serving the family.
Active pallbearers for Mr. Hunter will be Don Jordan, Sr., Mike Conly, Chase Tarlton; Leslie Linker,
Rodney Saunders and Thomas Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Claude Buck Hunter and David
J.C. Thomasson, Jr.
The family sincerely thanks the many caring people who were involved in Jim's care, and that of his wife Sarah, throughout their journeys with illnesses. Gratitude is extended to Tom McLemore, who devoted his life to them, and Nora Bauer who was a loving caregiver to both, and who became like family.
