

Mrs. Funderburk was raised on a farm on Sardis Road. She became an insurance underwriter when this was a pioneering career for a young woman. A loving mother, she taught her children to read and to love creativity and learning. Later she taught kindergarten at Sardis Presbyterian Church and was a teacher for Extended Day at Providence Day School. She was a caregiver for her mother, Nannie Hooks, who lived to be 101.
A deeply kind person and a lifetime member of Sardis Church, she sang in the choir, led youth groups, participated in a circle, and served on the Historical Committee.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Funderburk Sr.; parents, Carl and Nannie Hooks; and sister, Evelyn Hooks.
She is survived by three children and two sons-in-law: daughter, Amy Funderburk and her husband James C. Williams of Winston-Salem, NC; and twins, daughter, Julie Funderburk and her husband Page Tinsley of Charlotte, and son, Carl Funderburk Jr. of Charlotte.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC, 28270, with Rev. Jane Fobel officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church in her memory.
