Carole was born December 9, 1944 to James Vincent Pontillo and Jeanne Ellen Mae Eichelberger in Batavia, NY.
She worked most of her life as a seasoned Medical Transcriptionist. She was also a published writer and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Major in Psychology and a Minor in Business Administration; Rochester Business Institute – Medical Secretarial Science; and Notre Dame High School. She will be remembered fondly for her love of cooking and honoring her Italian heritage with family recipes including her adored handmade breads. She has also passed on her love of words for generations to come.
She cared deeply for her family. She was a vivacious, elegant woman and a much-loved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three daughters, Dawn Marie Carney-Meriwether and husband Charles “Chuck” Meriwether of Chapel Hill, Michele Renee Carney of Charlotte and Julie Carney McMakin of Wilmington; her sister, Linda Pontillo Pratt of Loveland, OH; six grandchildren, Ryan Astheimer and partner Karen Sacayanan, Kaeli Astheimer and fiancé Ryan Esposa, Scott McMakin and wife Alicia McMakin, Maria Meriwether, Marissa McMakin and Cassidy Carney; four great-grandchildren, Riley Astheimer, Annabelle Esposa, Keenan McMakin and Aiden Esposa and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mom/Nana will always be thought of as the “Matriarch” of our family. She was grand and will be dearly missed! We love you, Nana!
The family will have a private celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to A Living Tribute (plant a tree); the National Audubon Society; or a dog rescue charity of your choice in honor of Carole's memory.
