He was born January 2, 1942 in Boston, MA, where he became a lifelong Red Sox fan. He was the son of the late Sidney Hubert and Miriam Walker Huberman. He grew up in Miami, FL and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He moved to Charlotte in 1964 where he began his architecture career. He, together with best friend Harvey Gantt, founded Gantt Huberman Architects in 1972. The firm, which has impacted Charlotte with the design of many significant buildings, recently celebrated its 41st anniversary.
Jeff served the architecture profession for almost 50 years. At the state level, he led AIA North Carolina and the North Carolina Board of Architecture. Nationally, he served 20 years with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and the American Institute of Architecture. In 1994, Jeff was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows.
Jeff's influence touched many lives in the Charlotte community through his civic engagement in the arts. He served on the boards of many Charlotte arts organizations and championed the importance of the arts in the community. He was an artist in his own right, whose work is included in numerous public and private collections. His life’s goal was to make a positive difference in the lives of present and future generations through excellent architecture, support of arts and culture, community service and mentorship of young people.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Walker; his daughter, Amy Bucher and her husband Mark of Bethesda, MD; his son, Marc Huberman and his wife Carmen of Charlotte; granddaughters, Maddy, Lexi, Hannah, and Darin of Bethesda, MD; his brother, Glenn Walker Huberman and his wife Julia of Miami, FL; and Barbara Kemp Huberman of Washington, DC.
The Huberman family especially wishes to thank Dr. Reza Nazemzadeh and the wonderful staff of the Levine Cancer Institute who supported him with hope, humor, compassion and excellent care in his journey.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Beth El in Charlotte.
