He attended Sulphur Springs Congregational Holiness Church in his youth.
Mr. Wood attended Cool Springs High School in Forest City, NC and CCPC of Charlotte, NC. He served as an Able Seaman in the United States Navy on the USS Yellowstone (AD 27) and the USS Kenneth D. Bailey (DDR-713).
He married the love of his life, Patricia Gail Wood, on February 8th, 1964. Their devoted marriage of 61 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Gail preceded him in death, and he carried her memory with him always.
Mr. Wood was an exceptional salesperson throughout his career, working with various companies before becoming a successful entrepreneur. He owned and operated several full-service Exxon gas stations, a Snap-On Tools truck and a Fast Break snack truck. He concluded his professional life as General Manager at Pro Cal, where his leadership and work ethic were widely respected.
He truly never met a stranger. Mr. Wood had a generous heart and a gift for making others feel welcome-whether by providing shelter, teaching someone how to maintain their vehicle or lending a listening ear, or simply sharing conversation. He also loved “supervising,” a role he embraced with humor and pride. His compassion extended into the community through his participation in an annual Christmas bike drive for children, in partnership with The Charlotte Observer and Clowns, Entertainers and Friends.
Above all, he was devoted to his family. He cherished time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whether at home or traveling together to the campground, mountains or the beach. He loved “going” so much that during his retirement he was honored by the Veterans Administration for driving more than 10,000 miles as a volunteer-once again giving his time and care to others.
Mr. Wood is survived by a son, David L. Wood of Indian Land; three daughters, Charlotte Hogue (Bob) of Rock Hill, Sherri Craig (Joe) of Indian Land and Sandi Cook (Scott) of Lancaster; a sister, Dorothy Chalmers of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Charity, Robert, Monica & Becca; eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Tylor, Jessica, Mary, Kameryn, Ben, Josie & Bam; and two great-great-grandchildren, Mason & Keirra. Mr. Wood was also preceded in death by a son, Mikel L. Wood.
