Jo An (Josephine Anderson) Manning, 84, died on March 8, 2017 at the Hospice House at Southminster in Charlotte, NC. She was faithful, frank, feisty and fun. Her boyfriend says that the reason he knew right away that she was someone he wanted to know was because of "the sense of humor in her eyes." At any moment she might burst forth with one of the many songs, poems, or Bible verses she knew by heart. She cared about people, eager for them to understand her hope in Christ.
Born in Wayside, GA, into a minister's family, she moved periodically as she grew up in the South. She attended Columbia Bible College and graduated from Wheaton College in 1954 with a degree in Christian Education. She then went to nursing school at Western Reserve University, graduating in 1957.
She began 55 years in Atlanta at the Visiting Nurses Association. She and friends from this time celebrated special occasions together for over 40 years. In 1975 she became a nurse practitioner, and worked at Grady, especially enjoying hands-on foot care, providing this after retirement at clinics for the needy.
She was an avid tennis player and loved sports in general. She proudly followed the careers of distant cousins Peyton and Eli Manning, and kept a close watch on the Braves. She cycled as well, and drove her car strategically. Water volleyball was a blast at Park Springs retirement community, and after moving to Charlotte she helped start a balloon volleyball group at her Carmel Place home.
In Atlanta she attended Ingleside Presbyterian Church, and then Crossroads in 1982. There she served as a deacon, was a long-time member of a Bible study group, and loved singing alto in the choir. She led the Diabetes Support Group and taught in Vacation Bible School. She loved the cultural diversity at Crossroads and had a heart for world missions. Many summers she attended Peniel Bible Conference in New York, thankful for their practical scriptural teaching.
She was predeceased by her father, Frederic E. Manning, Sr., her mother, Josephine W. B. Manning, and her brother, Frederic E. Manning, Jr. She is survived by sisters MaryGene M. Longenecker, and Evelyne (Evelyn) Manning as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, "adopted" son and family, and a host of friends, old and new.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 15, at 2 pm at Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 5587 Redan Road, Stone Mountain, GA. There will also be a memorial service on Saturday, April 29 at 2:30 at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC, 28210. Interment of her urn will be in the Smyrna Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Newberry, SC, at a later date.
Memorials may be sent to Peniel Bible Conference, 336 Lake Tour Road, PO Box 369, Lake Luzerne, NY, 12846. On-line condolences may be offered at www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com. Arrangements under the direction of McEwen Pineville Chapel, Charlotte, NC.
