

Joan Lipscomb Austin aged 92 died August 12, 2024, at Lake Wylie Assisted Living. Mrs. Austin was born on October 22, 1931, in Beckley, West Virginia daughter of the late Albert R and Hattie B Lipscomb. Shegraduated in 1950 from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Ohio. She entered the United States Air Force in 1950, serving a a staff sergeant incharge of the medical dispensary at Pope Air Force Base.
After moving to Charlotte in the early 1950s, Mrs. Austin began her long career as a medical secretary, working for several local physician practices most notably Eastway Medical Clinic for 25 years and Mid Carolina Cardiovascular Consultants for 15 years.
Mrs. Austin was a long-time member of Third Presbyterian Church and later became a member of First United Methodist Church. She spent a great deal of time working as an advocate for the Mentally ill in North Carolina becoming a board member of several organizations and hospitals to better serve the needs of people in need of care.
Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her husband Bill Austin, her son David and her sister Peggy Golden.
She leaves behind her daughter, Kathy Jeranek (Ed) of Tega Cay, SC her sons, Mike (Jill) of Charlotte and her son Bob of Mooresville, her sister Joyce Rose of Okeechobee FL, her brother Albert Lipscomb of Reno, NV, grandson Kyle Austin, granddaughter Natalie Austin and two great granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Lake Wylie Assisted Living and Agape Hospice of Rock Hill for their compassion, care and support of our mother and our family during her illness.
In lieu of flowers we request donations be made to the Muffin Ministry at First United Methodist Church 501 North Tryon Street Charlotte NC 28202. They provide food for homeless and others in need in Uptown Charlotte.
