

Joanna Houchins, of Charlotte, died on Saturday, October 8, 2011 in Asheville, NC.
Joanna was born on March 7, 1922 in Charlotte, the daughter of the late Kathryne Basinger Houchins and Paul Houchins.
She graduated from Central High in 1941. She attended Flora McDonald College for one year, transferring to Queens College in Charlotte, graduating in 1945 with degrees in English and Math.
Joanna was employed by Carolina Foods, Inc. for her entire business career, and was an officer in the company.
She was active in the Business and Professional Women’s Organization for many years and enjoyed the association.
As a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charlotte her entire life, she served in many areas.
The family wishes to thank her caretakers, Annette Celender and Eldridge G. Greenwood for their care and devotion.
She is survived by her cousins, Martha Basinger Bookout Boyd, James A. Basinger, Jr., Barbara Basinger McLendon, Jane Basinger Gage, all of Charlotte, and Patricia Basinger Fearing of Manteo, NC.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery with the Reverend Emily Hartner of St. Mark’s officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening at Harry & Bryant Co., 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte.
The family requests any memorials for Joanna to be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203.
