

John H. Calhoun, died peacefully at Presbyterian Hospital, in the hospice unit, in Charlotte, NC at the age 90, 1 day before his 90th birthday (10/23/27). John was born in San Antonio, TX to the parents of W. E. and G. L. Calhoun. His family moved to Glasgow, VA when he was 2 years old. John lived near Balcony Falls, a C & O rail station where he and his brother, sister and friends enjoyed hopping rides to nearby stations and towns. He graduated from Natural Bridge High School. John and family moved to Charlotte in 1968 where he studied real estate and became a broker in 1973. In 1978, he opened his own office along with his wife Elizabeth and became very successful. He was an active and dedicated member of Freedom Presbyterian Church. John is survived by his sister Audrey Collins, of Newport News, VA; fiancee, Amanda Tucker; a step-daughter Phyllis Withrow Smedly (Larry), of Lexington, VA; his sons John Jr. (Kathy), David, Gary (Velvet) and Eddie (Kim), all of Charlotte. He also enjoyed 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, his brother and sister-in-law, W. E. (Bill) Jr. and Shirley Calhoun of Matthews, NC; brother-in-law, Don Collins of Newport News, VA; step son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Doris Withrow. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service in the Paul Helton Chapel. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
