
John Edward Hornberger passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Rock Hill, SC. He was born on August 16, 1923 in Buffalo, NY to Nellie and Arnold Hornberger. Serving in the Army's 29th Blue-Gray Division, 116th Infantry Regiment, Company E during WWII, he received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He was on Omaha Beach at Normandy the day after D-Day. Mr. Hornberger graduated from the University of Buffalo and went on to Rutgers University for a Masters of Social Work. He served as a federal probation officer and became Chief of the Jacksonville Office. Later he worked at the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, DC from 1975 until retirement in 1978 after 23 years of probation and pretrial services work. On December 27, 1947 he married Shirley Jessie Hornberger in Buffalo, NY. After Shirley passed away in 2008, he married Loraine Buck on June 5, 2013 in Jacksonville, FL. He was a member of the Masons, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Morocco Shrine Temple. He was proceeded in death by his parents, a younger brother Billy, and a son, Jon. He leaves behind his wife, Loraine; his son Dale; his daughters Cheryl (husband Tim) and Paula; six grandkids and six great-grandkids. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
