John Clark Johnson, 91, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.

Born in Tabor City, NC, on February 11, 1928, he is the son of the late Wilford and Bessie Williams Johnson. He was educated in Columbus County Schools. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Fayetteville State University and a Masters degree in Highway Safety from North Carolina A&T State University. A veteran of the US Army who served during the Korean Conflict, John was a devoted member of Simpson-Gillespie United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, participated in the United Methodist Men, and served in various leadership positions during his 50-year membership. He began his teaching career in Tabor City, NC, where he also served as basketball coach and referee. He retired from West Charlotte Senior High after 30 years of service to the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Thomas Johnson; four daughters; Wanda Baker, Winnie Butler, Donnae Johnson, and Rachel “Kristy” Johnson Spence (Christopher); three siblings; Ruby Jones, Carl Richardson (Barbara), and Clarence Richardson (Ruth); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Hattie Mae Kearney (aunt); Fred D. Thomas, Jr.(brother-in-law); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may visit from 11:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Monday, February 25, 2019, at Simpson-Gillespie United Methodist Church, 3545 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC 28216. Funeral services are scheduled to follow immediately at 12:00 P.M.

Military Honors & burial will take place in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, 1504 West Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078.
