John Alexander Russom, 95, of Burnsville, NC passed away on February 25, 2014. He was born in Memphis, TN on April 23, 1918 to the late William and Anna Vicory Russom. John was a WWII Veteran, serving with the US Navy as a Naval recruiter in Mobile, AL. He was employed by two different cotton firms in Memphis then began his career with Buick Motor Division from which he retired in Charlotte in 1974 after 33 years as Business Management Manager. After his retirement, John and his wife “Mike,” began square and round dancing. A few years later, he became a square dance caller and round dance cuer. He taught hundreds the joy of square and round dancing in clubs such as Swinging Saints, Mecklenburg Wildlife, Mallard Creek, Russom Rounders and Boots and Slippers. John had to step down in 1993 due to his diagnosis of throat cancer.
John is predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Frances “Mike” Bell Russom; brothers, William Y. Russom, Robert Russom and James B. Russom and sister, Marguerite Russom. He is survived by his two daughters, Janice Cheryl Scott of Burnsville, NC and Vicki Kinney of Indian Trail, NC.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 11 from 6 – 8 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 12 at 2:00 pm at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 1900 Emerywood Drive, Charlotte followed by the burial at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews.
