John Herbert Wright was born on February 2, 1932, in the Village of Mallusk, Northern Ireland, and passed away on May 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of professional achievement and enduring love for his family.
John was a dedicated Aerospace Engineer known for his innovation and technical excellence. He attended Belfast College of Technology, where he earned a Higher Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering. He was a graduate of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and later attended New York University Tandon School of Engineering (formerly Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute), where he earned his master's. One highlight of his professional life was his work at Fairchild Republic, where he first served as the manager of stress engineering on the A-10 Thunderbolt II — a role that earned him the deep respect of his colleagues and peers. John rose to head engineering for the A-10 and served as chief technical officer for the Saab Fairchild 340 commuter aircraft. Both aircraft are still actively flying today. As recently as ten years ago, he worked regularly as a consultant for Boeing aircraft in California.
He lived in diverse places—Northern Ireland, Toronto, Long Island, Huntington Beach, and Charlotte—each time building friendships and leaving a mark. On Long Island, he helped start a local Episcopal church, creating a spiritual home for many families. His commitment to others was evident not just at work but in every aspect of his life. He worked hard to keep his extended family close, even across the Atlantic, hosting annual “cousins’ dinners”, frequent trips to Ireland, and an international Zoom call for his 90th birthday.
John met Ethel in Northern Ireland, where they grew up near each other and married in 1955. They shared 61 years together until Ethel’s passing. He is survived by his daughter, Michele Goodwin (Donald), son, Glenn Wright (Kristina), and beloved grandchildren, Preston, Jeff, and Ashlyn.
Golf became a lifelong passion for John, sparked by his childhood near the Royal Belfast Golf Club. Even in his eighties, he played year-round in Southern California for the love of the game.
John will be remembered for his intelligence, warmth, and steady dedication to the people he loved. His guidance and example will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, June 6th, at 10:00 a.m. at McEwen Funeral Services at Sharon Memorial Park.
