Mr. Abernethy, age 87, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital - Huntersville. Born February 15, 1924 in Charlotte, he was a son of the late Joseph Reid Abernethy and Alea Crowell Abernethy. Mr. Abernethy served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the submarine, CERO (1942-1946). He retired from Macke Vending Company after 30 years of service. Mr. Abernethy was currently employed with Kelly Road Landfill.
The service to celebrate the life of Joseph Reid Abernethy, Jr. will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 10, 2011 at McEwen Funeral Service - Derita Chapel with The Reverend Steve Bass, officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Survivors include children, Joe Abernethy, III and wife, Luella, of Iron Station, Donnie Blackmon of Charlotte, Beverly Brewer and husband, Butch, of Charlotte, Becky Dewese and husband, Terry, of Huntersville and Joey Jordan of Davidson; brothers, Kenneth Abernethy (Deany), of Summerville, SC, Melvin Abernethy (Barbara) of Rock Hill, Charles Abernethy (Nancy) of Charlotte, Lee Abernethy (Sandy) of N. Charleston, SC and Earl Abernethy (Kathy) of Indian Trail; sisters, Ruth Gullick of Victoria, TX, Evelyn Robinette of Sykesville, MD and Sara Meissner (Greg) of Mountainside, NJ; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Abernethy was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Martin Abernethy; son, Frank Abernethy; and brothers, Harrison, Gene and Bill Abernethy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
