

Joy Edna Ross Plyler, a beloved wife, mother, and dedicated educator, passed away tragically on October 25, 2024. Born on November 12, 1959, in Charlotte, NC, Joy devoted her life to her family and her passion for teaching, leaving an enduring legacy in the hearts of many.
Joy embraced life with a joyful spirit and a deep love for her family. She cherished every moment spent with them, especially during their travels together, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Her boundless love, selflessness, and unwavering support defined her, making her a constant source of strength and joy. She also had a wide circle of friends in and around Charlotte who shared in her love for life, friendship, and community.
A graduate of Myers Park High School and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Joy became a dedicated Chemistry teacher who inspired and guided generations of students. Known for her wisdom, kindness, and ability to connect, she not only imparted knowledge but also nurtured a love for learning and personal growth. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, touching the lives of students, colleagues, and friends alike.
Joy is survived by her devoted husband, William Plyler; her loving children, sons Ross Plyler and Roger Plyler, and her daughter, Holly Plyler. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lola McWhirter Ross and William Putnam Ross, and is remembered by her loving brother, Roger Ross. Her legacy of compassion, strength, and love lives on in her family and in the countless lives she enriched through her teaching.
A celebration of Joy's life will be held on November 2nd at 1 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in her honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to her heart.
Joy will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her, especially her family, friends, and the many students whose lives she touched. May her spirit find eternal peace.
