Joyce was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to the late Betty and Ernie Gordon on July 20, 1942. She attended Boston University, and just shy of graduating, married the love of her life, Harris “Hal” Levin, and moved to the Midwest to begin their life together.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Joyce's life was marked by her commitment to her family and her Jewish faith. She was deeply engaged in her children’s lives, always knowing their friends, many of whom she formed lasting relationships with. She dreamed of becoming a Bat Mitzvah while growing up and made this dream a reality in 1983, at the age of 40, after studying and learning to read Hebrew as an adult. She fulfilled another lifelong dream when she returned to school and earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Indiana University, at 52 years old, in 1994 —a testament to her determination and love of learning.
Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Hal Levin, with whom she shared a lifetime of love. She leaves behind her beloved children, son David (Brenda) Levin, and daughter Susan (Bruce) Silberman, and her adored grandchildren, Drew, Jenna, Cage, and Ryder, who brought her immense joy, as her favorite role in life was being a grandma! She was preceded in death by her parents Betty and Ernie Gordon and survived by her brother Neil Gordon, her sister-in-law Donna Singer, and her loving nieces and nephews, Michelle, Eric, Sharon, Michael, Marjorie, Julie, and Laurence.
Joyce will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, infectious smile, sense of humor, and the love she so generously shared with her family and friends. Her family is especially grateful for the outpouring of love from our family, friends, and the staff at The Pines, who called, visited, and comforted her during her final days, a reflection of the deep impact she had on everyone around her.
A service to honor Joyce's life will be held at Temple Kol Tikvah in Davidson North Carolina on December 15, 2024, at 1:00 pm, followed by a graveside burial at the Hebrew Cemetery in Charlotte, where friends and family will gather to celebrate her life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Anti-Defamation League (www.adl.org) or The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research (www.lustgarten.org) in Joyce's memory.
Joyce's light will forever shine in the hearts and memories of those who love her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will live on forever.
The funeral will be held on December 15, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Temple Kol Tikvah, 605 South St., Davidson, NC 28036. Burial at Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC, 28206 will immediately follow.
