She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the daughter of William Langdon Thomas and Hester Holmes Thomas.
June went to Winthrop College and in 1952 earned a degree in education. She earned a masters in education from UNCC in 1976.

She made close friends there and still enjoyed going out for dinner or lunch with them. June was also an active member in the WIndsor Park neighborhood where she lived for nearly 50 years.
In 1951, June married John Dillard Pettigrew. They were married 49 years until John's death in 2001.
June was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister Barbara Thomas Mack, and a grandson, William Thomas Pettigrew.
Surviving are their children Nancy Pettigrew Ryan (Kevin) and John Dillard Pettigrew, Junior (Donna).
Other survivors include a granddaughter Brandy Pettigrew Farmer (Tim), and great grandsons Thomas Pettigrew, Joey Farmer, and Jake Farmer.
