Mrs. Mattocks, 69, died peacefully on June 15, 2011 at her home in Charlotte.
Katherine, beloved by friends and family alike, leaves behind a legacy of caring and compassion that will forever be remembered by those many people whose lives she touched. She was born in Charlotte on September 8, 1941, the fourth generation of her family to call the Charlotte community home. Katherine graduated from Myers Park High School and attended Hollins College before graduating from Queens College and thereafter residing in Charlotte for her entire life.
Katherine’s devotion to her family was beyond comparison. She reveled in the blessings of her two children, and adored her five – soon to be six – grandchildren, who called her Mimi. She was the very best friend, and to more people than could be counted. She included everyone she felt had a need; and touched, every day, those that she loved. A secret could not escape her grasp, and a celebration was her best time. She was the kindest and gentlest of souls, a person of inclusion rather than exclusion.
Preceding Katherine in death were her parents, Leland Gannaway Atkins and Katherine Crowell Atkins. She is survived by her beloved husband Gordon Lynn Mattocks, Jr., her children Kitty Mattocks Bray and Gordon Lynn Mattocks, III and their spouses William Parks Bray and Anne Miller Byne Mattocks. She is also survived by her brother Leland Gannaway Atkins, his wife Betty Benson Atkins, and her sister-in-law, Diane Mattocks Simmons.
Katherine’s grandchildren will remember the treats they could always count on when they visited their Mimi’s home on Colville Road or her mountain house in Linville. They are Hutchinson Parks Bray, Elizabeth Walker Rhodes Bray, Katherine Atkins Mattocks Bray, James Walker Mattocks and Miller Byne Mattocks.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, with a visitation to follow in Providence Hall. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Katherine’s family requests that friends consider contributions to one of her two special charitable interests,
The Crossnore School or Myers Park Presbyterian Church. For The Crossnore School, memorials should be submitted to Post Office Box 249 Crossnore, North Carolina 28616. For memorials to Myers Park Presbyterian Church, contact Betsy Elliot at (704) 927-1263 or by email at [email protected].
