LaBruce was born in Bennettsville, SC into the family of Annie Smith Potter and James Valton Potter on July 24, 1940. The oldest of the five children, she enjoyed many happy memories growing up with her siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles in Cheraw, SC, and Rockingham, NC.. LaBruce, who could not swim, vividly remembered her baptism in the dam in Cheraw, SC and spoke of it often. Later in her adolescence, the family moved to Charleston, SC. LaBruce started a family of her own in Charleston, SC before later relocating to Charlotte, NC.
Family was at the center of LaBruce’s life. She loved cooking large family dinners, and hosting holiday gatherings. She loved baking and made the best German Chocolate and Coconut Cakes. LaBruce took great pride in hosting her family and was sure to always set the perfect formal table, complete with place cards for seating and a framed menu.
Some of LaBruce’s happiest memories were the ones she made at the beach with her family. She enjoyed Girl Trips with her cousin, Patricia, and friends to DeBordieu, SC. Her happy place was Folly Beach, SC. She loved walking on the beach and watching her grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren play in the sand. She loved going to Folly Beach and taking a day trip into Charleston to shop. It was always a priority to visit family while at the beach.
LaBruce found immense joy in being known as “Sister”, “Brucee”, “Grandma”, “Priscilla”, and “Aunt Bruce” to her family. While some names she preferred over others, she knew at the heart of them she was loved and adored by her family.
LaBruce was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Pamela, and Son-In-Law, John William. While in her daughter’s care, she was blessed to be able to see her granddaughter, Ashley, and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Andrew, daily. Caroline and Andrew brought LaBruce much joy and happiness, even if they called her Priscilla. She loved watching them play and enjoyed their contagious laughter. They sustained her with joy and companionship during her illness watching Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, Disney movies or whatever show Caroline found to watch.
