Larry Brewer, age 76, of Charlotte, NC, entered eternal rest on March 12, 2025 at Atrium Health Main with his family by his side. Born on March 3, 1949 in Robeson County, Larry was a simple man of quiet strength and he left a lasting impact on everyone who met him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi “Buddy” Brewer and Daisy Lee Locklear Brewer, of Robeson County; a sister, Nellie Francis Brooks, of Pembroke, NC and a brother, Johnny Brewer, of Robeson County. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Cathy Ann Brewer, of Charlotte, NC.
Born and raised in Robeson County, a proud Native American of the Lumbee Tribe, Larry moved to Charlotte in 1970 with his wife, Carolyn. He learned the mechanic trade with a specialty in transmissions. He was a gifted transmission mechanic and later became a business owner. Known by many as “Chief”, Larry was dedicated to his work. He started his business, Chief’s Transmissions, out of his garage and over time, word of mouth became the only advertisement he needed. Larry was honest and known as one of the BEST transmission specialists around.
He will be remembered for his love of family, football and his many hobbies. Larry was a girl dad and then blessed to become Papa Larry to his grandchildren. Growing up, he rode horses. Later, he found a love for motorcycles and learned to scuba dive. Over the years, he bought and restored many vehicles. Larry was a good cook and loved to bake homemade chocolate cakes. After retirement, he was able to watch his favorite westerns, like “Gunsmoke” and “The Rifleman”. He enjoyed taking trips back home to Robeson County to visit family, help his cousin on the farm and to drive the tractors. Larry was the ultimate Carolina Panther football fan. He would watch his “Cardiac Cats” every time they played.
Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Brayboy Brewer of the home; his daughters: Carolee Brewer Hardin (husband Donald Gene) of Lumberton, NC; and Terri Brewer Young of the home; his six grandchildren that he adored beyond measure: Landon, Jadyn, Taryn, Peyton, Teagan, and Tylan; his brothers Lathan Brewer (wife Irene), Clyde Brewer, both of Red Springs, NC and Carlos Brewer (wife Mary) of Shannon, NC; his sisters Lillian Hammonds and Helen Rich, both of Red Springs, NC. Larry was loved by all he encountered, especially the employees and clients at his DaVita Dialysis Center. After being on dialysis for 16 years, they became a part of his extended family. He leaves behind a host of family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held on March 23rd, 2025 at 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel.
We find comfort in his testimony of being a Christian and that he was ready to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Larry’s legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever.
