Layana graduated from Marion Franklin High School in Columbus, Ohio. She later attended Northwood University in Midland, Michigan where she received her Associates Degree in Business Management. She was married to the late Stephen Perry and to that union was born Delbert Purcell Perry whom she loved dearly.
Layana was employed at Big Bear Stores Division in Columbus, OH for twenty-one years as a Category Manager, Buyer-skilled in purchasing, merchandising in retail management, sales and store operations. She also had many years of executive corporate experience in retail purchasing. She also utilized her skills at Drug Emporium and Krogers as a manager, training stores for the Kroger reward card.
Layana was a member of the Bethel Temple Church in Columbus, OH and later became a member of the New Life Church in Columbus. She became a member of Transformation Church when she retired to Lancaster, SC where she was a greeter and member of the usher board and a women’s bible study group.
Layana was loved by family, friends and co-workers. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with, and on many occasions she would help others even when she was in need herself.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wiladean C. Simmons, Delbert Simmons and sister Tonya R. Simmons. Layana leaves to mourn her loss; sisters Melodie Gardner (Jesse), Lisa Clark (Dane), Kelly Crudup (James); brothers Delbert Andre Simmons, Dante Simmons and Hassan Simmons; grandchildren Nahla and Amir Perry; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, aunt and uncle.
