

Leo was born in Anthon, Iowa on April 2, 1937, the second child of Laurence and Emma Kuhn (Schieuer). He grew up on a farm just outside of Kingsley, Iowa and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1955. Leo always had a passion for making models and reading Popular Mechanics. After graduating, he pursued his interests and attended Creighton University in Nebraska for two years and then transferred to Iowa State University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 1962. After graduation he moved to Endicott, NY where he worked for IBM as a cost engineer. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a 1st Lieutenant when discharged in 1965. He met his wife Judy in 1965, and they married a year later. They had four children: Christine, Larry, Cindy, and Jeffrey. In 1972 Leo graduated from State University of New York-Binghamton with a Master’s Degree in computer science. In the summer of 1979, they all moved to Charlotte, NC where Leo retired from IBM in 1993, after 31 years of service. In 1994, he began working for H&R Block where he earned his IRS Enrolled Agent status.
Leo gave of his time and talents in various volunteer activities including coaching youth baseball, treasurer of Grace Methodist Athletic Association, serving as an usher and on the parish counsel at St. Ann Catholic Church, and serving on the school board for Charlotte Catholic High School.
Through the years, Leo enjoyed gardening, model railroading, reading, and his pets. He also enjoyed trips back to Iowa for 4th of July family gatherings.
Leo is survived by wife of 48 years, Judy; four children and nine grandchildren – Christine Kuhn (Jack and Madeline), Charlotte, NC, Laurence Kuhn and Lynne (Justin, Ryan, Rachel, Kayla and David), Chesapeake, VA, Cynthia Kuhn, Concord, NC, and Jeffrey and Teri Kuhn (Henry and Jane), Durham, NC; seven siblings, Barbara Jakiela – Sylva, NC, Vincent Kuhn (Alana) – LeMars, IA, Pauline Kuhn (Westminster, SC), Janice Schacherer (Bob) – Esterville, IA, Margaret Brosey (Mike) – Oklahoma City, OK, Kathleen Tichy – Solon, IA, and Ralph Kuhn (Karla) – Grimes, IA; numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Laurence and Emma Kuhn (Schieuer).
His family will greet friends on Wednesday, May 13th, from 6-8 p.m. at McEwen-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, in Charlotte. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 14th, at 10:30 am, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish, 6828 Old Reid Road, in Charlotte. The Reverend Mark S. Lawlor will be the celebrant.
