She and her husband, Dale, were married in 1976 and shared life together for 46 years before Dale’s death in 2022. Their 2 sons, Josh and Matt, reside in Charlotte.
Linda attended UNC-Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College where she studied physical therapy. Linda worked as a physical therapy assistant in nursing homes and offered in-home care through home health agencies. Her warmth and sense of humor put her patients at ease; she displayed patience for those who were not willing participants for the exercise regime needed for their improvement.
Despite challenges brought on by the chronic illness that preceded her death, Linda never complained. She loved people. Linda and Dale enjoyed cookouts with family and friends, offering a welcoming place for all. Birthday celebrations and Halloween were special occasions in the Thompson household. Trips to Myrtle Beach with Dale’s family were a highlight of the summer. Although she was not a fan of cooking, Linda’s pecan pie was a requested standard for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
One of Linda’s favorite hobbies was coupon shopping with her friend, Rabbit. Every Saturday they set off for the day and came home delighted with a car full of groceries for which they paid very little or even got for free. She and Dale also enjoyed going to yard sales and thrift stores. Linda loved dogs, having gotten her first one in college, and was never without a canine companion throughout her life.
Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Brevard Thompson; her mother, Christine Biles Oliver and her father, Richard Loomis Oliver. She is survived by her two sons, Joshua Douglas and Matthew David; sisters Christine Oliver (Gregory Rudolf) of Toronto and Pam Haney (Richard) of Richmond; sisters-in-law, Diane Thompson Savage (Ed) and Denise Thompson; nephew Ed Savage and nieces Leah Gaertner, Charlotte Rippy, Emily Davis and Harley Brown.
A memorial service in remembrance of Linda will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 4855 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28205.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Greater Charlotte SPCA (charlottespca.org) or to Eastern Hills Baptist Church (ehbc.info).
