Born on his grandparents’ farm in Allsboro, AL, he spent his early years in North Alabama, in Decatur, Cullman, and Florence. He attended high school in Corinth, MS, and graduated with honor from Vanderbilt University in 1957. A chemical engineer, he enjoyed a long career in the synthetic textiles industry, working for Chemstrand in Decatur, AL; Monsanto in Guntersville, AL, and Pensacola, FL; and Celanese in Charlotte. Following retirement from Celanese, he founded his own executive search firm, Mark III Personnel, which he operated for 25 years. Afterwards, he was affiliated with SP Associates in Charlotte, conducting executive searches in the engineering and financial industries, among many others. Mr. Allen was an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Vanderbilt University Alumni Club in Charlotte and was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross. Lindsay was a passionate sports fan, and was particularly fond of the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, North Carolina Tar Heels, and his alma mater, the Vanderbilt University Commodores. He was also an avid reader, keeping up on the latest financial, economic and political news. As many friends and family members have noted, Lindsay “never met a stranger,” and could walk up and talk to anyone about anything.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents Lindsay A. Allen, Sr. and Ruby Denton Allen, and a brother Jim Allen. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Miller Allen; two sons, Michael (Dorie) of Wake Forest, NC; and Jon of Hamtramck, MI; one brother, Thomas Allen (Pam) of Fairhope, AL; a sister, Mary Daily, of Santa Monica, CA; three grandchildren (Henry, Mary Harper and Meghann), and several nieces and nephews.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 13th at Gold Hill Road Church of Christ, 1055 Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill, SC 29708.
