Judy loved a lot of things about her life but was most passionate about her family. There was never a day that passed that she wasn’t concerned about someone. It may have been her children, a niece, a nephew, a neighbor, or a complete stranger. She surrounded herself with a family that loved her and she returned that love with simple gestures. In her early years it may have been a ride to the grocery store, an unexpected visit, or in her later years it may have been a phone call just to check in.
Early in her career, Judy worked as an administrative assistant (secretary in those days) in a downtown office and then worked in some local mills. She also spent several years working as a nurse’s aide in a community assisted living center. Caregiving was Judy’s calling.
Even though Judy loved and cared for many people there was one person that always came first and that was her husband of 37 years, Harold. They took care of each other and were seldom apart. They lived their lives as one, sitting on their front porch, drinking coffee, talking about nothing in particular. Just life as they knew it and they shared a love that most could only hope for. The only thing that made them happier was to have their children or grandchildren sitting with them.
Judy was born January 17, 1941 and was the daughter of the late Brown Helms and Betty Sharpe Helms King. She grew up in the Paw Creek community where she lived for many years. Even today there are still many people in the area that remember Judy’s laugh and quick comebacks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Brown. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph (Joe) Helms. Judy is survived by two sons, Dean Bennett Jr.; Mike Brown and wife Kate; and three daughters, Kim Bennett Swanger and husband Ronnie; Lisa Stasney and husband Buddy; Tina Brown Moore and husband Scott. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren – Diana Bailey, Jamie Swanger, Krissie Swanger, Holly Sailors, Ryan Bare, Katie Ann Brown, and Noah Brown. Also great grandmother to 9 – Adam Davis, Brooklyn Swanger, Maxwell Bailey, Benjamin Bailey, Jalen Bare, Canton Bare, Adyson Sailors, McKinley Sailors, and Greyson Sailors. She was survived by three siblings Eddie Helms, Reba Helms, and Connie Carter. And let us not forget the dozens and dozens of nieces and nephews that knew her as Aunt Judy.
There will be two celebrations of life for Judy. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Cornerstone Family Worship in Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM at the church prior to the service. A second celebration will be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in Denver, N.C. In Judy’s memory we ask that you take a few minutes to hug your mom, your dad, your spouse, your children or anyone that is important to you. Cherish every moment. Also, just remember that rocking chairs have many stories to tell and we hope that you will remember both Judy & Harold every time you have a seat in yours!
