MCPO (Ret) Lyle Atwood Davenport, 56, of Charlotte died Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Born October 8, 1954 in Plymouth, NC he was the son of the late Atwood B. Davenport, Jr. and Ella Mae Lyle Davenport. Mr. Davenport was a US Navy Veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He enlisted in the US Navy under the Delayed Entry Program on April 28, 1973 and, upon graduation from Plymouth High School, reported for recruit training at NTC, Great Lakes, IL. After his basic training, he was attached to the USS Portland (LSD-37) in Norfolk, VA; followed by the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in Norfolk, VA; served as Reserve Training Administrator in Dayton, OH; followed by attachment to the USS Opportune (ARS-41) in Norfolk, VA; served as Company Commander at the same NTC, Great Lakes, IL where he received his basic training; and then finished his years of service back in Norfolk, VA on board the USS Nassau (LHA-4) and then shore duty at SIMA Norfolk. He received many awards and decorations during his proud service of 26 years. Following his retirement, his passion for honoring US military veterans and riding motorcycles led him to become a dedicated member of the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) and the Charlotte Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Chapter, in which he served as Activities Coordinator. He was also actively involved in the Make- a-Wish Foundation.
He is survived by his daughters, Erin Davenport and fiancé John of Phoenix, AZ, Jessica Davenport of Virginia Beach, VA; and Amanda Davenport and significant other Tom of Virginia Beach, VA; the mother of his children, Linda Davenport of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother Stanley Davenport and wife Alice of Marlinton, WV; his partner and significant other, Jane Whitley of Charlotte, NC, her grandson, Jonathon, additional grandchildren and many other family members; and many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a countless number of friends, shipmates and fellow Patriot Guard Riders.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 18, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Holy Covenant United Church of Christ at 3501 W. WT Harris Blvd. Charlotte NC 28269. Interment will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.
