Mr. Parker, age 87, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2014, at Mecklenburg HealthCare-Sandy Porter Road following a short illness.
Born August 22, 1927, in Harnett County, N.C., to Lesley and Alice Grimes Parker, Lynn was a WW II veteran having served in the U.S.Army’s Intelligence in Germany. He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and successfully completed 38 years in education throughout the state from Pamlico County to Taylorsville. Lynn retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 1989, but he never stopped studying.
Moving from South Mecklenburg to Olympic High School in 1966, Lynn met another new teacher, Lynda Brantley, whom he married in November, 1971. They made their family the students they taught over the years, many of whom still stay in contact.
Lynn attended and was a member of Charlotte’s Good Shepherd United Methodist Church from its first service at Kennedy Junior High School.
Always a Tar Heel, Lynn loved college athletics most, but he had scouted for the Kansas City Royals over the years and had early on been a fairly successful tennis player. During his education work, he had coached tennis, baseball, and girls’ basketball.
Predeceased by his parents, his two brothers, John and Bill, of Rocky Mount, N.C., his infant sister Margaret, and his sister-in-law Sylvia, of Rocky Mount, N.C., Lynn is survived by his wife of 43 years, a sister-in-law Joyce, of Rocky Mount, N.C., three nephews and one niece. His most recent responsibility was a rescue cat named Lucille, who is still looking for Daddy. The last family member is our caregiver Tina Abraham, without whom we could not have survived these last few years.
A loving and caring man, Lynn willingly shared his life and his means with causes he deemed worthy. Never realizing his own influence, Lynn was a most humble man.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Mecklenburg HealthCare-Sandy Porter Road for their loving care of Lynn during the last few weeks and the staff of Novant Presbyterian Hospital Main 4-C and Public Safety earlier this month.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 13110 Moss Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28273. Reverend Talbot Davis and Reverend Randy Madsen will officiate.
Memorial would be appreciated at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 13110 Moss Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28273, Grace Community United Methodist Church, 1190 Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill, S.C.29708, or at the donor’s choice.
