Mr. John Mack Stephens, 92, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2016 at the Carriage Club of Charlotte. A native of Leasburg, NC, he was the son of the late Voss McDaniel Stephens and Annie Dixon Stephens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Miriam Mitchell Stephens, his brother, Buford Stephens, and his sisters, Lucille Sanders, Annie Claire Stephens, and Mary Arnold Stephens.
After leaving the family farm, he joined the US Army in 1943, where he was a member of the 794th Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Battalion, serving in Europe. He graduated from North Carolina State College in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Stephens worked for the engineering firm of Charles T. Main, Inc. in Charlotte, with his work taking him to Indonesia, Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and India. After 38 years, he retired to care for his wife until her death.
Mr. Stephens was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1958, where he faithfully served as a deacon. He selflessly and humbly served others, working quietly behind the scenes. He loved to play golf, playing weekly with his friends. As an engineer he could repair anything, including cars, appliances, or whatever needed fixing. He was always a gentleman and a loving family man, with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved his wife, his children, and grandchildren, and was much loved by them.
Mr. Stephens is survived by children, David M. Stephens (Rebecca) of Waxhaw, Nancy S. Fortson (Don) of Matthews, and Donald E. Stephens (April) of Concord. Also surviving are his grandchildren, David, Michael, and Sarah Stephens; Caroline Sajonz (Alex), and Samuel Fortson; Mitchell Stephens and Travis McClester (Sarah).
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 4, 2016 at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 12:30 until 2:00 PM. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will begin at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Trevor Smith officiating. Internment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park with military honors.
