A gifted athlete Myers, aka “Boogie” played football for Harding High School earning a position on the team as a freshman. This 130 pound lineman played for Coach Harris where Myers was awarded “Best Lineman of Harding High” in 1948, and also achieved the All City team. He continued to share his love for football by later coaching Coulwood-Oakdale Pop Warner football. Even when the boys grew older, Myers continued to follow them through their high school careers.
Following his graduation from high school, Myers attended Presbyterian college for two years. He returned to Charlotte to work for his dad’s growing business P.C. Godfrey Plumbing, Heating and Air conditioning.
Myers married his high school sweetheart, Janice Rose Johnson and this union was blessed with 62 years of marital bliss, ending in the death of his beloved wife, Janice Rose in 2014.
Myers served in the Korean war and was stationed on Heartbreak Ridge. During his time in Korea, Janice had their first child, a son, Richard Myers Godfrey. Tragically he died in infancy before Myers was able to see him.
Upon his return from Korea, Myers and Janice had four daughters, Dr. Virginia Godfrey, Melanie Bell, Tracy Godfrey, and Ashley Reeves. Myers was a supportive father and always encouraged his girls in all their activities of showing horses, soccer, and softball.
Myers was an avid Tar Heel basketball fan and Atlanta Braves supporter often taking the grandchildren to see the Braves play. At the age of 51, Myers joined the men’s softball team at Durham Memorial Baptist where he loved to play catcher.
Myers spent his entire spiritual life at Durham Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and Christmas dramas. He was a faithful servant to his Lord and will always be remembered for his deep faith, gentle spirit, and kind heart. A wise man who never asked for recognition yet gave it to all.
Myers is survived by his four daughters, Dr. Virginia Godfrey, Melanie Bell and her husband Dart Bell, Tracy Godfrey, and Ashley Reeves and her husband Mike Reeves. He was instrumental in raising and supporting five grandsons and their wives, Austin Kelly and wife Kimberly, Colten Bell and wife Clair, Justin Reeves, Preston Reeves, Trevor Reeves, and two granddaughters, Mariah Narup and husband Daniel and Dalton Bell. Myers was blessed with three great-grandsons, Owen Narup, Theo Narup and Miles Kelly, and two great-granddaughters, Aurelia Narup and Grace Kelly.
